It’s Not About The Crown I’m Wearing

“For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?”

Esther 4:14

Being a mom is the absolute best but it’s very easy to get lost in your role as a mother.

We aren’t the same person we were when no one else depended on us. We can’t just leave the house to go hang out with our friends on a whim. We can’t stay up all night scrapbooking or crafting. Well, we could, but that would be a bad idea when rest is coveted as a new mother. We can’t do a lot of the things that made up much of who we were before being a mom. Because now, we are a mom. As beautiful as that is…a lot of mothers struggle with the loss of identity apart from that.

I love the story of Esther.

There are so many aspects of this book of the Bible that touches my heart. Here is a quick run-down in case you aren’t familiar with this story.

The King (not a Jew) got into a tiff with his wife and demoted her. He needed to find a new wife. A search team went out and gathered the most beautiful in the land. Esther was ultimately chosen to be the king’s new queen but unbeknownst to him, she was a Jew. The king’s official, Haman, hated a certain Jew named Mordecai. Mordecai was Esther’s uncle, who had raised her. Haman persuaded the king to kill all the Jews. Esther had a dilemma. She could ignore the problem and hope the King would never find out who she truly was, a Jew, OR she could stand up for her race, reveal her true identity, and pray for the best!

Esther speaks to her uncle about her position, “He sent back this answer: ‘Do not think that because you are in the king’s house you alone of all the Jews will escape. For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?”

“Then Esther sent this reply to Mordecai: ‘Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my attendants will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.’

Spoiler alert: She reveals herself to the King and exposes Haman’s evil plan. The King has mercy on the Jews and Haman was hung from the gallows he had made for Mordecai. Esther chose not to hide her true identity and it was in her true identity she was able to fulfill her purpose!

As a mom of four boys just about everything about my independent life before kids are null and void. I’d trade it any day to be my kid’s mom! But, I have found myself with a new identity…Mom.

Not just “mom” who is striving to be the role of mom as God created me to be but “mom” who is striving to be the role of mom as social media and my weakness of comparison to my most put-together friends is telling me to be. I tend to focus more on the crown I am wearing rather than the woman wearing the crown.

We’ve probably all heard the saying from Esther, “for such a time as this.”

Mordecai was suggesting to his niece that her God-ordained purpose for her life was not just being another beautiful addition to the Jewish nation.

It was not about just wearing royal robes and showing what a high position an orphaned daughter could hold.

It was not about the crown she was wearing.

No, Mordecai was suggesting that her identity THROUGH all of that, before all of that, despite all of that was what was going to save her people.

God placed her in a POSITION on Purpose, not because THE POSITION was the PURPOSE but so that her IDENTITY would have POWER for the PURPOSE. Did you get all that?

You see…

We aren’t single, fun, and crafty.

We aren’t married, educated, and successful.

We aren’t Mom, home-maker, YouTuber.

We are God’s child, created with a purpose, uniquely blessed with every spiritual blessing, justified and redeemed, an heir with Christ, a temple of the Holy Ghost, chosen, holy, and blameless before God, set-apart!

Whatever POSITION you find yourself in right now or whatever  “crown you are wearing” remember, that is only the stepstool God will use to elevate the POWER of your true identity in Christ!

It is so immensely paramount for us to understand who we REALLY are! We can be a lot of things to the world but there is only one identity that will ever echo in eternity “for such a time as this.”
